Samsung’s VR Comeback in 2025?
It’s been a decade since Samsung first ventured into virtual reality with the Gear VR headset, unveiled at IFA. The company followed up with a successful sequel, dominating the VR headset market in 2016 with 4.5 million Gear VR sales out of 6.3 million total headsets sold. While Samsung briefly explored mixed reality with Microsoft in 2017, its VR efforts eventually lost steam.
Now, there’s buzz that Samsung is gearing up for a VR comeback. During MWC 2022, Samsung Electronics CEO Han Jong-hee teased a new headset, but plans seemed to be delayed due to the Apple Vision Pro in 2023. However, at the July 2024 Unpacked event for the Galaxy Z foldables, Samsung reminded us of its upcoming XR product, slated for release soon. With 2024 coming to a close, many wonder if the project is still alive.
Clues and Collaborations
A recent investor presentation by Samsung offered a clue. Under the 2025 Outlook, the company mentioned improving connectivity among products, including upcoming XR devices, to enhance the Galaxy ecosystem experience. This suggests that an early 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event introducing the S25 series may also showcase Samsung’s XR headset. However, given past delays, nothing is set in stone.
Samsung isn’t going at it alone. The tech giant is partnering with Google and Qualcomm, as mentioned at a 2023 Unpacked event. Google will likely provide the base software, while Qualcomm contributes its chipset expertise. The Meta Quest 3, running a custom Android build on a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, is a testament to this successful collaboration.
Innovative Display and Sensor Technology
There are rumors that Samsung’s XR headset will feature micro-OLED displays, offering higher pixel density and brightness compared to LCDs used in Quest headsets. It’s unclear if these displays will be Samsung-made. Additionally, Samsung unveiled an ISOCELL sensor with integrated depth-sensing ISP in 2023, ideal for XR headset tracking.
With the Samsung Galaxy S25 rumors gaining traction and a potential launch timeframe of January, we can expect more details to emerge about the XR devices that may accompany the flagship phones. Stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates on Samsung’s VR comeback and its impact on the Galaxy ecosystem.
