Apple iMac Gets a Refresh with the M4 Chipset
Apple has revealed an exciting update to its iMac lineup with the 2024 edition, powered by the company’s latest Apple M4 chipset. This all-in-one desktop PC offers improved performance and a range of new features, making it an appealing option for creative professionals and power users alike. The new iMac also introduces a subtle refresh to its color options, giving it a modern twist.
Performance Upgrades with the M4 Chipset
At the heart of the new iMac is the M4 chipset, which brings significant performance enhancements. The 10-core CPU (4P+6E) is rated to be 1.7x faster than the M1 and 1.3x faster than the M3 in Excel tasks. Gaming enthusiasts will appreciate the new 10-core GPU, offering twice the performance of the M1 GPU and a 10% boost over the M3. Additionally, the improved Neural Engine in the M4 is over 3x faster than the M1’s NPU, enabling faster machine learning tasks and improved AI capabilities.
Memory, Storage, and Display Enhancements
Apple has upgraded the memory and storage options for the 2024 iMac. It now comes with 16GB of system memory as standard, with configurations available for 24GB and 32GB. Storage starts at a spacious 256GB and can be expanded up to a massive 2TB. The display remains the same stunning 24-inch 4.5K Retina panel, but Apple has introduced an optional nano-texture glass upgrade for $200. This advanced display option reduces glare and provides a more comfortable viewing experience, especially in well-lit environments.
Connectivity and Port Options
The new iMac offers improved connectivity, with the premium model sporting four Thunderbolt 4 ports with Ethernet support. This enables users to connect two 6K 60Hz displays or a single 8K 120Hz display. The base model comes with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, with the option to add Ethernet separately for $30. It supports a single 6K 60Hz external display.
Webcam, Keyboard, and Color Options
Apple has upgraded the front-facing webcam to a 12MP 1080p camera, which supports the Center Stage feature. This uses a wide-angle lens to intelligently track and frame participants during video calls. The Desk View feature is another handy addition, allowing the camera to capture and correct the perspective of your desk. The color options have also been refreshed, with six new shades that offer a subtle twist on the previous generation’s colors, along with the classic silver option.
The 2024 Apple iMac starts at $1299 for the base model, offering impressive value for money. With its powerful M4 chipset, improved connectivity, and stunning display options, the new iMac is a compelling choice for anyone looking for a high-performance desktop PC.
