Apple Brings Tap to Pay to More Businesses in Europe
Apple has expanded its Tap to Pay feature for iPhones to five additional countries across Europe, making it easier for businesses to accept contactless payments. With this update, merchants in Austria, Czechia, Ireland, Romania, and Sweden can now turn their iPhones into mobile payment terminals, joining the United States and other countries where Tap to Pay is already available.
What is iPhone Tap to Pay?
For those unfamiliar, Tap to Pay is a feature that allows businesses to accept card payments using just their iPhone. Customers can simply tap their contactless card, iPhone, Apple Watch, Android device, or Wear OS watch near the merchant’s iPhone, and the transaction is securely completed using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This eliminates the need for additional hardware, such as traditional payment terminals or card readers.
One of the key advantages of Tap to Pay is its security. Transactions are processed using the Secure Element inside the A-series Apple chip, ensuring that payment data remains private and secure. This gives businesses and customers peace of mind, knowing that their transactions are protected.
How to Use iPhone Tap to Pay
Using iPhone Tap to Pay is simple. Merchants can sign up with supported payment platforms, such as Adyen, Revolut, SumUp, or Viva, and enable the feature on their compatible iPhone. The service is available on iPhones starting with the iPhone XS, making it accessible to a wide range of users.
Once set up, businesses can accept payments by opening the payment app and following the on-screen instructions. Customers will receive a confirmation on their device once the transaction is complete, providing a seamless and efficient payment experience.
“We’re thrilled to bring Tap to Pay to more businesses and customers across Europe,” said Apple in a statement. “This expansion underscores our commitment to providing secure and innovative payment options that empower merchants and delight customers.”
The rollout of iPhone Tap to Pay in these five new countries demonstrates Apple’s continued focus on expanding its payment services globally. With each expansion, Apple is bringing the convenience and security of Tap to Pay to more businesses and customers, revolutionizing the way payments are made.
