Introduction to Google Tensor Chipsets
Google’s Tensor chipsets, since their debut, have been based on Samsung-fabricated Exynos chips. However, with the upcoming Tensor G5 and G6, Google is making a notable shift by adopting TSMC’s advanced process nodes, starting with the Tensor G5 (‘laguna’) that will power the Pixel 10 series.
Tensor G5: Powering the Pixel 10 Series
The Tensor G5 chipset is expected to be a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Fabricated on TSMC’s 3nm-class N3E process node – the same node used for Apple’s A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro series – the Tensor G5 will bring improved performance and efficiency to the table. The CPU cluster has been updated to include a powerful Arm Cortex-X4 prime core, along with 5x Cortex-A725 performance cores and 2x Arm Cortex-A520 efficiency cores.
In terms of graphics, the Tensor G5 will feature a dual-core Imagination Technologies (IMG) DXT-48-1536 GPU, clocked at an impressive 1.1 GHz. This new GPU unit brings support for ray tracing to the Tensor lineup for the first time, along with GPU virtualization for enhanced graphics performance in virtual machines. Google is also expected to deliver a substantial 14% improvement in AI tasks thanks to a new and improved NPU.
Tensor G6: Taking Performance to the Next Level
Looking further ahead, the Tensor G6 (‘malibu’) is expected to be fabricated on TSMC’s upcoming N3P node, which is still a 3nm process but offers notable gains. Leaked documents suggest that the N3P node will provide a 5% jump in frequency while drawing 7% less power and occupying 4% less surface area. This means that the Tensor G6 could offer even better performance and power efficiency, potentially setting new benchmarks for smartphone chipsets.
Final Thoughts and Internal Links
The upcoming Google Tensor G5 and G6 chipsets are set to offer significant upgrades in performance, efficiency, and new features. With TSMC’s advanced process nodes and improved CPU, GPU, and AI capabilities, the Pixel 10 series and future devices powered by these chipsets are sure to impress.
